  • Coaching guide

The help for the coaching is pretty vague to say the least and really I think many of us would like some guidance on this.

For the batting coaching, if you have an aggressive player and work on defensive shots his aggression eventually becomes average. Whether that is an improvement or not is down to the way you play I guess but he's not actually gained ability in that scenario, just changed traits? So that makes me wonder does the same apply for off side and front foot etc, are you simply trading an extra ability to play outside off to improve the leg side rather than retaining the off side ability and improving your leg side game also? If so whether there is a gain is really difficult to work out, I've started just to leave the players with the traits they have and not noticed any tail off in the ability of regens.

Then there is the general technique training. I basically have guys on this until they turn 24. But of course there is no update on whether the player has improved and as they tend to improve with age anyway there really isn't any meaningful way to gauge whether this is actually doing anything? Say you train a player from 18 to 24 on their technique, what gain would they make on average and is there a limit to how much they improve thus meaning at some point a long the way they have maxed out their potential and the technique training is a waste of time from then on?

Any guidance on this would be really helpful as I'm starting to think it is a pointless exercise and training for optimal form from Day 1 wouldn't make any difference to their overall progression

This is a question that I've seen asked many times, but never answered. I get that a huge part of the game is not knowing all the facts about players, but that doesn't explain why we aren't given a little bit of guidance about the impact of coaching.

Ever since I can remember (I've been playing this game for many years), the 'general coaching' thing has persisted where you were never given any indication of improvement. You always assume it must be working, but in reality it very easily could not be changing a thing. It's much like if you train a young player on aggressive batting for a whole season, but don't get a notification, did that player steadily get any better over the course of the year? Or do they improve in a big chunk and only at the time when you get the notification (which would mean if you trained a player all season and never got a notification, which happens at a fairly common rate, you've effectively wasted a training slot on that player all year)?

Not having any guidance on this stuff makes it hard to believe you've got the impact on your squad that you want to have.

Very good question jk. I'm interested in the responses to this one. Personally I think that the aggression and spin/pace thing depends on your strategy for the side - having someone with spin specialty in your side can be useful especially in the ODIs, but pace preference openers are pretty useful.

A good thread, I have always thought the technique coaching side of the game is very unexplained, I know the guide has always said that general technique training is best for younger players, the general consensus being up to 25, But the Bowling technique such has Aggressive/Accuracy/Defensive etc is a bit vague, some players improve almost straight away and some train all season with no improvements, so sometimes as Powercord says it feels if your wasting coaching points? I always train my opening Bowlers on aggressive bowling and any one day specialists on accuracy but I'm still not sure if I am doing this right, Maybe F/MF on aggressive, FM/M on accuracy and spinners on defensive is the way to go, any thoughts?
