  • A Story while I wait - Royal London One Day Cup

First off a side note, this is not a cricket captain story, this is however a test run for when cricket captain is released on the ipad towards a story I will attempt. This is based on DBC 14 and any comments or thoughts are gladly accepted for when the real thing begins in the next month.

So what better way to start then with a relatively short competition in the Royal London One Day Cup, teams were split into two groups with the top four going through to the quarter finals. The groups and fixtures are based on the real life One Day Cup

    GROUP A
    Derbyshire Falcons
    Essex Eagles
    Gloucestershire Gladiators
    Hampshire
    Lancashire Lightning
    Leicestershire Foxes
    Northamptonshire Steelbacks
    Worcestershire Royals
    Yorkshire Vikings

    GROUP B
    Durham
    Glamorgan
    Kent Spitfires
    Middlesex Panthers
    Nottinghamshire Outlaws
    Somerset
    Surrey
    Sussex Sharks
    Warwickshire Bears

Each day of fixtures will have a specific game that is focused on with recaps on all the other games that day and if enough people show an interest in this I will throw open the choice for what game people think should be the game of the day, the first game day should (hopefully) be posted later today with the game of the day being Lancashire v Yorkshire.

    DAY 1 FIXTURES
    Derbyshire Falcons v Hampshire
    Glamorgan v Middlesex Panthers
    Lancashire Lightning v Yorkshire Vikings

Obviously please do comment with any thoughts and suggestions you may have and I will try and implement them

Ashraf proves he's the king of swing

The eagerly awaited local derby between Lancashire and Yorkshire took place at Old Trafford and it was Yorkshire who left their neighbours in disarray. Adam Lyth won the toss and immediately chose to bat first on a glorious day in Manchester knowing the ball would swing early but the pitch would come to the batsman later on. Lyth was proved right as Yorkshire's openers never got going with the dangerous Aaron Finch removed for just 2 caught behind by Alex Davies off the bowling of Kabir Ali, the evergreen Ali struck twice more in his opening spell as he removed Adam Lyth (17) and Alex Lees (21) to leave Yorkshire toiling on 48-3. This brought Andrew Gale to the crease and played very defensively to begin with alongside Jonny Bairstow (65) as the two put on 101 for the 5th wicket before Gale was removed trying to smash Tom Smith back over his head and just chipping it back to him to fall for 78, some aggressive batting in the last 10 overs from Tim Bresnan (28) and Adil Rashid (42no) moved Yorkshire to a competitive 268-7 from their 50 overs, Kabir Ali was the pick of the bowlers collecting 3-54 off his 9 overs.

The Lancashire run chase failed to launch after the break with Ashwell Prince, Steven Croft and Karl Brown all being sent back to the hutch without reaching double figures as Lancashire struggled to 28-3 off the powerplay. Luis Reece tried to hold up the onslaught before he was deceived by the spin of Adil Rashid and stumped by Bairstow for 36. The Lancashire batsman never looked interested in chasing Yorkshire's total and just seemed to be batting out the overs, Moin Ashraf tried to live up to his potential by removing Alex Davies (18), Wayne White (3) and Tom Smith (12) to leave Lancashire 128-9 with 8 overs to go, Jordan Clark and Simon Kerrigan batted out the rest of the game with Jordan Clark reaching his 50 off the final ball of the innings to leave Lancashire 111 runs short. Ashraf returned figures of 4-27 from 10 overs and was backed up by Jack Brooks who got 2-26, Yorkshire will be hoping that this is a good platform to kick on with their campaign.

Gladiators fall on their sword as Steelbacks snatch a tie

The game that little was expected of lit up the competition as a dramatic match finished in a tie in the last over of a superb match at Nevil Road. Gloucestershire captain Michael Klinger won the toss and bowled first on a cold gloomy day in Bristol and with much expected later on in the day. Northants were rattled early as Will Gidman took 3 early wickets to set the Steelbacks innings on the back foot from the start with David Willey smashing a short ball straight to Alex Gidman at square leg to depart for 10. He was quickly followed back by David Sales who saw his off stump uprooted by a Gidman yorker, before Alex Wakely was sent back the very next ball nicking off to keeper Gareth Roderick to leave the Steelbacks 31-3.

Rob Newton and Kyle Coetzer started to rebuild the innings before Liam Norwell had Coetzer caught behind by Roderick for 23 and in the very next over part time spinner Benny Howell had Steven Crook trapped in front for 3 as Northants crawled along to 87-5 off 27 overs. The big partnership of the day came from Rob Newton and new batsman James Middlebrook who added 110 for the sixth wicket before Newton fell once more to the spin of Howell for a well worked 91 off of 84 balls, Ben Duckett was then run out in comedic yes no yes no fashion as he was run out by Klinger at point without troubling the score. Andrew Hall came in for the last 10 overs and smashed his way to a quick 33 not out with Middlebrook ably assisting with his unbeaten 83 as the two put on 62 from 60 deliveries to finish 259-7 from their 50 overs, Will Gidman was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up 3-61 along with Benny Howell collecting 2-59.

Gloucestershire started their innings in a similar fashion to Northants, Michael Klinger was trapped in front by Azharullah for 0, before Hamish Marshall was caught behind by Ben Duckett off Maurice Chambers for 9 to leave the Gladiators 36-2 off 8 overs. When someone was needed to step up Chris Dent through his hat in the ring and put the innings back together as he and Alex Gidman put on 120 for the 3rd wicket, the partnership was broken when Gidman tried to take a quick single and was run out by Azharullah at mid on for 53. Dent carried on at the other end bringing up his 100 off of 103 balls and included 14 fours with a sweep to the boundary off the bowling of James Middlebrook, but the veteran spinner who had bowled a very tight line and length managed to bowl Benny Howell through the gate for just 1 run and leave Gliucestershire 162-4 with 12 overs to go.

The pendulum of the game swang in the favour of the Steelbacks when Dent was clean bowled by Maurice Chambers for 113 and two new batsman at the crease, Ian Cockbain and Gareth Roderick tried to force the Steelbacks onto the back foot as they put on a quick 44 before Roderick fail to a slower ball from Chambers for 25 and then 3 balls later Cockbain gone to the swing bowling of David Willey for 23 to leave Gloucestershire 224-7. The match was perfectly poised going into the last 5 overs with Will Gidman the last real hope for the home side but two Northants veterans combined to remove Liam Norwell for 1 as Andrew Hall managed to draw out an edge from the batsman which carried to David Sales in the slips and with the very next ball removed David Payne's off stump to leave Gloucestershire 235-9 with 3 overs to go. Will Gidman and last man Graeme McCarter kept the score ticking over and scoring boundaries when need to leave the Gladiators needing 10 off the final over which was to be bowled by David Willey, Gidman flicked the first ball of the over to the boundary down to fine leg to leave them needing just 6, second ball of the over was slapped through the covers for another 4 to leave Gloucestershire needing just 2 to win from 4 balls. A well placed backward point saw Gidman get just a single off the third ball to bring McCarter on strike, with the field up to the number 11 Willwh charged in and bounced the young bowler who took a mighty swing at the ball and only managed to hit the ball straight at Chambers at mid off to finish the game with the scores level, McCarter finished on 13 while Will Gidman stood disconsolate at the other end on 21 not out, Chambers and Willey took 3 wickets but both were expensive going for 66 and 70 respectively as both sides came out of the game with a point.

          Somerset crush disappointing Outlaws

Somerset cruised to the top of Group B with a crushing 138 run victory over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in what was a dominant all round by the visiting side. Somerset won the toss and batted first and made the Outlaws suffer with an outstanding opening partnership of 174 between Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton, Trescothick rolled back the years with a run a ball 96 that included 3 big sixes over square leg before being trapped in front by Andy Carter.

With the initial breakthrough a few more quick wickets fell as Johann Myburgh, Chris Jones and James Hildreth all fell cheaply while Comptom continued his good run of form with the bat at the other end. Compton then brought up his second century of the tournament off 103 balls with a quick single to extra cover his innings was extremely well paced and held together a Somerset innings that could have gotten out of hand after the loss of 4 quick wickets, he was eventually removed by the spin of Samit Patel for 105 but the news got worse for Notts as that brought Craig Kieswetter to the crease who brought speed into Somerset's batting. 2 more wickets fell before the end of the innings with the part time bowling of Sam Wood who took career best figures of 7-0-46-4 removed Peter Trego for 24 and Craig Meschede for 2 to leave Somerset 253-7 off 45 overs. Nottinghamshire's attempts at containing Somerset in the last few overs failed as Kieswetter and new batsman Alfonso Thomas added 49 for the 8th wicket to carry Somerset to 302-7 off their allocation Kieswetter finishing on 57 not out from just 40 balls.

Nottinghamshire's run chase failed to launch with 2 wickets falling in the first 10 overs as openers Micjael Lumb and Sam Kelsall both fell with the score on just 37, James Taylor and Samit Patel tried to hold the innings together but they both fell to Peter Trego. The heavily tattooed pace man had Patel trapped in front for 26 before having Taylor caught on the deep square leg boundary for 25 by the man of the match Nick Compton. Nottinghamshire's game was effectively over when Rikki Wessels was run out by James Hildreth after a risky 2 was taken to deep mid wicket only before the ball to be launched back in and Wessels to be a good 3 feet short to leave the Outlaws 93-5. Nottinghamshire did have a mini revival through Chris Read and Steven Mullaney to give them the faintest sniff of victory but this vanished when Read's off stump was removed by Alfonso Thomas. The game ended in spectacular fashion as Steve Kirby collected the wickets of 9,10 and 11 in consecutive deliveries to finish the game, Andy Carter was trapped in front for 11 before Luke Fletcher and Harry Gurney both missed swinging yorkers from Kirby to finish the game with Mullaney left at the other end on 23, Nottinghamshire were bowled all out for 164 with 17 overs still left to bat.

Nottinghamshire steal it at the death

Nottinghamshire out the disappoint of losing at home the day before to bed with a 23 run victory over Glamorgan at the SWALEC stadium with both sides having chances of winning it. Nottinghamshire won the toss and immediately chose to bat first on what looked to be a hard flat pitch. So it proved with Michael Lumb and the returning Alex Hales smashing the ball to all corners of the ground in a display of brutal hitting, when. Lumb was first to go for 48 off the bowling of Graham Wagg the Outlaws were 84-1 off just 12 overs.

Sam Wood was asked to come in at number three and immediately made an impact hitting Dean Cosker straight back over his head for 6 off the first ball, he and Hales added another 79 runs for the second wicket before Hales snicked off to mark Wallace behind the stumps for 77. Wood then took a back seat as James Taylor came in and smashed a quick fire 31 off just 24 balls before missed a straight one from Cosker to leave Notts at the halfway stage at 198-3, Samit Patel joined Wood at the crease and the two out on another big partnership of 89 in just 14 overs before Patel was caught behind off the bowling of Wagg for 39 and to move Notts to 287-4. At this point a Wood who had already gone past 50 put the hammer down once more and reached his century with his third maximum of the innings he would remain not out at the end on 111 off of 110 balls, Graham Wagg was the only Glamorgan bowler to hold his head high as he took 3 wickets for 65 as Nottinghamshire scored 324-5 off of their 50 overs.

Glamorgan really only had one chance of winning and that was with the in form Jacques Rudolph staying in through out, he and opener Will Bragg got the innings off the right way with an opening stand of 99 before Bragg was caught at point by Rikki Wessels off the bowling of Harry Gurney for 41. Chris Cooke joined the South African at the crease and the two formed another crucial partnership of 62 before Cooke was gone clean bowled by Steven Mullaney for 36, two more quick wickets followed as Mullaney removed Murray Goodwin and Jim Allenby cheaply to leave Glamorgan 185-4. However Rudolph was still at the crease and brought up his century with his 16th four of his innings and give him his 2nd century of the tournament, he did not last much longer as another mini collapse saw Mark Wallace bowled by Luke Fletcher for 31, Graham Wagg run out by Wessels for 0 and eventually Jacques Rudolph caught on the boundary by Michael Lumb off Samit Patel for 134 as Glamorgan once again faultered to 253-7 with 10 overs to go. Tail Enders Andrew Salter and Dean Cosker led a small fight back as they added 37 for the 8th wicket before Cosker was bowled by Fletcher for 11 amd the score on 290, Michael's Hogan and Reed added a few extra runs but when Salter was caught behind by Chris Read off the bowling of Mullaney for 28 the game was over with Glamorgan finishing 301 all out, Notts had there chance to celebrate being back to winning ways with the possibility of a home quarter final still alive at this early stage.

Thanks, it's an good idea the one I have for ICC14 when it's out on iOS is similar and a lot more complicated. Thanks for also taking the time to read it, half the time I feel like I'm just ranting into the ether.

Jigar proves a right pain in the Naik

Jigar Naik had a day to remember with the ball and in the field as he had a hand in 6 wickets as Leicestershire beat a Essex at Chelmsford by 6 wickets on a nightmare day for the home side. Foxes captain Josh Cobb won the toss and elected to bowl first on what was a minefield of a pitch. Essex struggled early doors and were 63-4 after the powerplay overs, Tom Westley was caught at deep square leg by Naik off the bowling of Charlie Shreck for 9 after hooking a short ball straight to the man on the boundary, Ravi Bopara was run out soon after for 15 trying to take a risky single in the covers and falling well short of his ground. Two wickets fell in two balls for the Eagles as Mark Pettini was cleaned up by Naik for 35 and the same fate befell Jaik Mickleburgh the very next ball.

Graham Napier and Ryan Ten Doeschate led a mini revival and achieved Essex's highest partnership of the innings of 37 before TenDo was caught by James Sykes off the nagging medium pace of Shiv Thakor. Napier soon moved to 50 off 64 balls with as the one highlight of the Essex innings but was back in the pavilion the next delivery trapped LBW by James Sykes. The tail faired little better as none of the bottom four scored double figures and with Naik collecting two more wickets and two catches to go with it Essex had been bowled all out for 154 in just 35 overs.

Leicestershire' reply started in a similar vain to the first innings after being brough down to 59-3 off the powerplay overs, Matt Boyce was run out by Jaik Mickleburgh for 3 who with a long bomb from deep mid wicket into the bowlers end had Boyce removed by the smallest of margins. Two more wickets fell soon after each other as Ryan Ten Doeschate had both Ed Eckersley and Ramnaresh Sarwan removed caught behind without really troubling the score. Leicestershire never really looked back after the powerplay overs and with Essex only having one real spinner in Tim Phillips were happy to tick the runs over without taking too many risks, Josh Cobb who opened the innings brought up his 50 off 84 balls in a patient knock which only saw him hit the ropes three times. He and Dan Redfern put on 86 for the fifth wicket and brought Leicestershire just short of the end before Cobb was caught at mid off after chipping a Tymal Mills slower ball to Ben Foakes and departing for 73. Redfern collected his well deserved 50 in the next over off 64 balls with a sharply run three down to third man and when Niall O'Brien smashed the last ball of Reece Topley's over for 6 it handed a Leicestershire a six wicket victory with 14 overs left to bat.

                    Stokes starts Durham's campaign

An inspired Ben Stokes knock and suicidal Sussex batting proved the difference between Sussex and Durham when the two teams met at Hove, Sussex won the toss and elected to bat in what was originally thought to be a good decision. Chris Nash and Luke Wright opened the batting but both were caught behind for single figures with the score on 19-2, this brought Rory Hamilton-Brown to the crease who batted very aggressively for a quick fire 50 but as wickets continued to fall around him he eventually was cleaned up by Paul Collingwood for 57 to leave Sussex 107-5. Sussex found themselves even further in the hole when the quick wickets of Ben Brown, Steffan Piolet and Will Beer fell quickly to leave the Sharks in danger at 155-8.

Thankfully for Sussex and their fans the tail wagged as Yasir Arafat and Lewis Hatchett added 56 for the 9th wicket and carry the Sharks passed 200, a change of bowling brought about the end of the partnership as Chris Rushworth trapped Arafat in front for 50. Hatchett continued on with new batsman Chris Liddle as the pair added another 23 for the final wicket to at least make the finishing total something that could be defended, Hatchett was the unbeaten batsman at the end when he finished with a brisk 40 off 23 balls but left Sussex fans thinking what could have been with the Sharks being all out with 12.5 overs unused.

Durham's reply was patient to begin with knowing that the key to victory was keeping wickets in hand which was a feat they didn't achieve to start with, after 18 overs Durham were 62-4 with Paul Collingwood and Ben Stokes being the men at the crease. The mix of the elder statesman and the young upstart guided Durham closer to victory with Collingwood bringin up his 50 in good time and with Stokes settled the pair kept the scoreboard ticking over. The partnership was eventually broken when Luke Wright deceived Collingwood with a slower ball to have him bowled for 66 and the score on 143-5, Gordon Muchall came in and played a back seat to Stokes who went passed 50 in 74 balls in what was a patient knock. Muchall decided to take a swing after this and was out playing onto his stumps off the bowling of Will Beer for 11, this brought big John Hastings to the crease who cracked a run a ball 26 along with Stokes added another 20 to win the game for Durham by 4 wickets with 3 overs to spare

Canterbury Minefield Brings Early End To Game

A sub par wicket at the St Lawrence ground in Canterbury saw the game finished well before the expected time as only 58 overs were bowled in the match, Kent won the toss and chose to bowl first on what looked to be a pitch to offer a lot of turn. Glamorgan went out to bat with the in form Jacques Rudolph at the top of the order, the South African was the only Glamorgan batsman to offer resistance at the start as both Will Bragg and Chris Cooke were removed cheaply both caught at slip by Brendan Nash off Mitch Claydon. Rudolph was then joined by Jim Allenby and the two set about rebuilding the innings as they started to attack the Spitfire bowling, the experienced Rudolph brought up his second 50 of the tournament off of 55 balls an innings that would seem impressive in the final outcome and when he fell to the part time spin of Fabien Cowdrey soon after he departed for 67 with the score on 86-3. Kent decided to then have spin from both ends as Cowdrey and James Tredwell ripped through the batting lineup which in 15 overs saw Glamorgan slip from 86-3 to 140-9 with none of the Glamorgan batsman making it past 30. The innings was wrapped up when Doug Bollinger was brought back on and destroyed Michael Reed's off stump to see Glamorgan finish 147 all out.

Kent knew that the best form of defence would be to attack and with Glamorgan only having one spinner in the side felt that the game was there to win, Rob Key and Sam Northeast opened up the innings and put on 63 for the opening partnership before Dean Cosker had Northeast caught behind for 29. Captain Key stood tall not allowing the bowlers to settle and departed soon after reaching his 50 as the slow medium pace of Graham Wagg took it's toll on the pitch. Three more quick wickets fell as Nash, Cowdrey and Stevens all fell in quick succession but Alex Blake stood tall blasting the. All to all corners. With Kent needing just 12 to win off 29 overs Blake decided to finish the game early by launching Cosker for two massive sixes to finish the game and finish unbeaten on 46 as Kent cruised to victory.

                        Lightning finally strike

Lancashire finally kick started their competition with a 2 wicket victory over the Derbyshire Falcons at the county ground to keep their extremely slim chances of qualifying alive. Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first on what looked a good deck but struggled in the early going. The Falcons were reduced to 80-5 at one point with the top all being removed only Shiv Chanderpaul and Paul Borrington getting into double figures with Jordan Clark and Kyle Hogg claiming two wickets apiece.

Tom Poynton and David Wainwright started the salvage job as the pair put on 98 for the sixth wicket before the spin of Simon Kerrigan had Poynton trapped in front for 44, Wainwright was in imperious form and when joined by Jon Clare he took the initiative and started to dismantle the Lancashire bowling attack he was eventually removed for 89 off of 61 balls as he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Tom Smith with the score now at 229-7. The Falcons led by Clare managed to add a further 76 runs before eventually being bowled all out, Tony Palladino added 19 and Clare who was the last man out finishing on 64 as Derbyshire finished 305 all out with 7 balls of their 50 left, Jordan Clark was the pick of the bowlers with 3-53.

Lancashire' target was immense and when they too started as badly as the Falcons had done the team had every right to be worried, after the first lot of powerplay overs gone the Lightning were 58-3 with the top 3 and all their in form batsman being removed. Lancashire needed some heroes if they were to chase this down and they stepped up, Karl Brown doubled his run total for the competition as he scored 82 off of 78 balls and formed a crucial partnership with no.7 batsman Jordan Clark to bring Lancashire up to 202-6 before Brown was LBW to Wainwright. Clark was joined in the middle by Tom Smith and the two began to accelerate the scoring with each scoring well more than a run a ball. In the end Smith tried one shot too many and was caught at deep square leg by Clare off the bowling of Tony Palladino for 23 off of 17 balls and leave the Lightning needing 57 off 14 overs. The lack of wickets in hand meant the scoring slowed a little but with Clark and new batsman Kabir Ali picking up a boundary an over to keep them in with a chance and when Lancashire needed 15 off the final 2 overs the batting side were in the drivers seat, Clark who had bullied his way passed 50 was eventually removed by Mark Footitt for 62 with the Lightning needing 8 off 7 balls. Kerrigan came in and blocked the last ball of the over to leave Ali on strike, Ali slapped the first ball of the over through extra cover to the boundary and with the very next delivery flicked the ball down to the fine leg boundary to finish the game and give Lancashire they're first victory.
