New Zealand tour of Pakistan series roundup

Well we won the series 2-0 after going into it hoping to be able to draw. This is a huge result and sees us move up to 19 points in the rankings, equal with 4th placed India.
There are mixed feelings about the drawn final test. At no time in this test did we look like being able to win. This is a concern. We did make 3 changes for this test so our team was not at full strength but we need to give our extended squad experience at this level. While we are disappointed with this game, we are happy that we managed to comfortably hold on for a draw when we were in a position that looked like a loss was on the cards.

    Positives

Taylor had a good series scoring 320 @ 64. Good to see him getting back into form.

Rutherford scored 349 @ 58.17. Once again he is one of our top run scorers. If he continues this he'll end up one of New Zealand's top batsmen ever.

Watling had a good series scoring 208 @ 52. Great batting from our keeper and a return to form.

Williamson scored 269 @ 44.83. Great to see him finally hit some form for us.

Southee took 18 wickets @ 18.06. He had a strike rate of 41.72. If he continues this form on it won't be long before he's the top ranked bowler in the world.

Small took 5 wickets in his debut match. He went for too many runs but his strike rate of 57.6 was good though.

Boult, Bracewell and Williamson all had either averages under 30 or strike rates under 60, but not both.

    Negatives

McConchie just couldn't bowl. He came in to the series he good form then got spanked for 5 an over. Taking no wickets, he's looking less and less like a good spinning option.

Raval had a terrible series. 51 runs @ 12.75 is shocking.

Brownlie had a terrible series. 33 runs @ 8.25 is awful.

Teams for the first test v Sri Lanka

The first test at home this summer. We go into this series slight favourites as we are 1 place higher in the rankings and have home ground advantage. We go with a predictable team.

Looking at the pitch and weather we want to win the toss and bat first. The dark clouds on days 4 & 5 mean it is going to be tough batting then. That combined with the pitch looking like it will offer spin early means Sri Lanka will be a dangerous opposition in this game. Once again I am baffled as to why we would serve up a sub-continent team a turning wicket.
