Not much business in the market for us, but that was largely dictated by the fact that it was going to cost me 82k to keep Hollins! I can only assume by that that he has incredible potential. Even Jefferson only wanted 23k! I feel bad for releasing M Lumb, but I couldn’t guarantee him first choice, so I allowed him to leave. Carver was also unlucky, and has since retired from professional cricket. Otherwise, the other players were using wages I could re-allocate.
Thakor and Kerrigan are two great signings though. They will be first team fixtures for me, as I look to go for the triple.
We’re back! Kerrigan and Thakor both get their first start, as we pick a fifth bowler over batting depth for this.
Toss:
Notts win the toss and bat.
No match report as usual, but enjoy the scoreboard, and the useful info I found from this match!
Five things I learnt from this match:
- Hales and Burridge as an opening partnership could work
- David Payne is showing signs of improvement after a poor first season at the club
- Kerrigan and Swann in the same team could work well
- Jefferson is improving on last season, the guy could be a real find
- I’ve still not established why Hollins believes he’s good enough for a wage of 82k yet!
Congrats in retaining the county championship mate !
Is there any chance when you do your next Ins and Outs section you could also include details on the players you resigned with a bit more detail.
Did you keep your 4 overseas guys ?

Loving the thread mate
Yeah, sorry, I meant to add that, and got distracted!
All the overseas left unfortunately, I couldn't fund them after the resignings and the additions of Thakor and Kerrigan. Overall, Read, Taylor, McGregor, Ramshaw all signed new contracts, and Hollins and Jefferson got their first contracts. I'd have liked to have kept Mitch McClenaghan, but the discovery of Jefferson means that I can cover that loss.
I was suprised that Hollins wanted 82k for his first contract though, I've never seen that before!
Observations:
- So Hollins can bat! Need him to do that more often though
- We’ll need a regular spinner at all times this season
- We look good in terms of batting depth
- Coles and Jefferson still work well in tandem
- Payne is now probably level with Fletcher and ahead of Fuller in the pecking order

I've seen similar contracts for regens' first contracts and wondered if it's a bug. However high someone's potential is, their starting contract shouldn't be that high!

Burridge, my regen from last year is on 42k, but I thought nothing of it as I still had excess budget. This year the finances were about 200k tighter, and I nearly couldn't afford him, I had to sacrifice my youth budget for the year. There was a 62k valued regen batsmen as well, and there is one at Leicestershire who if I remember correctly is on 75k. But Jefferson, who I personally feel is the better player at the moment, wanted 26k. Madness!

Our first league game is against the recently promoted Warwickshire. The biggest questions for me in terms of selection were the bowling line up. Jefferson was a dead certainty; it was a case of who supported him. This was largely dictated by the pitch though and my preference for a deep batting line-up. Broad and Swann both play ahead of Fuller and Kerrigan in the end, as Broad will give me more batting, and Swann will be needed for long bowling stints.
The batting line-up was so much easier to sort out. Hales will be partnered by Burridge, certainly at the start of the season. Hollins keeps his place after his mammoth century, and Taylor was guaranteed a place. Ramshaw sneaks into the line-up, and Thakor will play. Read retains the gloves.
Toss:
Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bowl.
Day 1:
We struggled in wet, overcast conditions, and finish the day 268-8. There were a couple of rain intervals, which didn’t help us. Hollins went back to scoring very little, but James Taylor and Chris Read dug us out a hole. Taylor got a century as he and Coles prepare to resume on day 2.
Day 2:
At one point, Warwickshire looked set for a mammoth total. Orton and Westwood looked set, but mid-way through the last session, Swann struck, removing Orton. Coles got Westwood, and the wickets started tumbling. By the time bad light stopped play, Warwickshire had collapsed to 201-6.
Day 3:
After Warwickshire finished their collapse, we pressed on. Our batsmen hit quickly, as we got to 335-7 before declaring, leaving Warwickshire 401 to chase in a day to win. They started badly, losing Chopra before the close, finishing on 15-1.
Day 4:
Once Warwickshire were 67-5, there was no hope for them. They were bowled out cheaply, and we secure our first win of the season. Let the good times roll!
Batting Award:
James Taylor – Two spirited batting performances, why is this guy not in the England setup?!
Bowling Award:
Stuart Broad – They all bowled well, Broad just shading it on wickets.
Points:
Notts 21, Warwicks 4
Stat:
Out of 144 overs, we bowled 45 maidens. Talk about cramping the batsmen’s style.
