  • IRL Stats in cricket (Article by S James)

The last paragraph of this piece by ex Glamorgan and England opener Steve James is the most enlightening.

Apparently Eoin Morgan performed very well when interviewed for the England one-day captaincy recently. So well, in fact, that he was given a crack – or was it craic? – at the job in Ireland last week.

I've seen this software (or software like it) at a Worcestershire 2nd XI game at Kidderminster last year.

    I'ts mind boggling.
    • "Propensity to hook ball over waist height" and
    • "Dot balls left wide of stumps" as well as
    • "Dot balls defended on stumps" and
    • "Dot balls after playing shot (wide of stumps)"
    • " Average on-side boundary count" (per player)

...the list went on and on and on. And one bloke filled it all in while swigging endless cups of coffee. It took about 5-6 button presses per ball.

And this was a Worcestershire SECOND XI game. Most of the support staff and analysts were with the main (not much better) team.
    This high powered software?
Excel - and a spreadsheet that contained a couple of macros.

I Don't for one minute think decisions are based on the dozens of stats this software generates per se. But there are "metrics" which fall out of the figures. It can work out strengths and weaknesses in both general terms, and more specific ones if you need to "drill down"

Neil Wendman (the Kiddy groundsman) said the statto is always there and it's done in excel so they can just add new stuff to it if it seems important.

Many of the big clubs have specialist software with graphical UI.

Surrey certainly have, It's been featured on TV with David Lloyd looking suitable gobsmacked.

David Ward said at the time (earlier this year) something like
"We had this sort of thing just starting in my last year at in FC cricket, apparently the software can cost of five thousand to develop"

    Wow..a whole five grand.

The guy demonstarting the new software said it was adapted from baseball software and cost almost £100,000 for the changes and one licence.

Stats are MASSIVELY IMPORTANT in REAL LIFE CRICKET.

Surrey spend more on stats software they they do on their captains wages!

(And that's not including the cost of the statistician who probably cost at least half that again...every year)

Meanwhile. In the sim world we get run rates that stop working after 2 seasons (why exactly?) and the most basic of records that are deleted after 2 years. (again...why?)

The article again. Sorry that Steve James chooses to write for Satans Own Newspaper, but that's the way it is I'm afraid.

The continued lack of stats in ICC is not so much the elephant in the room - as the Brontosaurus in the bathtub.
Working...
