  • Where is the Domestic (UK) 50-over cup?

Why is the 50-over cup missing this time around?
Okay there is waaay too much OD stuff, and to my mind in the real world the 40-over game should be dropped - after all, there is no international variation so why bother with it?

But where is the 50 over game gone??

it has been removed from english cricket in favour of a bigger T-20 competition

They scrapped the Pro League. Then changed last years FP Trophy to run all season. Then decided to change it to 40 overs. As a competition in real life it's been quite good, they changed the powerplay structure and all the grounds use short boundaries so it's pretty high scoring leading to some pretty exciting games. It just seems quite hard to win because you have to top a league of 7 to get to the semis or be the best runner-up.

Shit, I had not realised that.
How bloody STUPID of the EWCB.
After all, there is no international 40-over game, so what the hell is the point?
Why do the idiots not keep a domestic game that has the same rules as ODI?
Maybe this way the ODI England team would be something other than a joke?

Hmmm. I think it may be a clever ploy by the ECB. Previously, we've always failed in 50 over cricket by not being aggressive enough, and the 40 over game really does help get the batsmen to score at 7 and 8 an over in the domestic game.

You obviously haven't heard that Australia is planning on changing their domestic OD format, as well - they are talking about splitting the overs - Team 1 bats for 20 or 25 overs, Team 2 bats for 20 or 25 overs, Team 1 comes out to finish their overs, and then Team 2 comes out to finish their overs.

As an aside, there is no international 4 day game, only the 5 day game, but most domestic competitions play 4 day games...

i think it is goin to do well for England's International limited overs cricket. 40 overs wuld bring out best talent for ODIs whilst longer 20-20 tournament culd yield specialists in tht format.

Having a 40-over tournament running alogside a 50 overs one, always felt like a waste (atleast of my time on ICC)

I love the 40 over competition. Much better than the 50. Always seem to watch the 40 over rather than the 50 last year so....40 is much better

                  Always preferred 40 overs myself.
I grew up with Sunday League on BBC2.
40 overs just misses out 40 minutes of mid inning turgidness.
50 over game is in for a massive overhaul and won't be part of world cricket in it's current form for more than a year or two.
20 overs (3 hour games - ie an evening) and 40 over (5 and a half hour games - an afternoon) will be the future.

The seven hour game has no long term future.

The continued lack of stats in ICC is not so much the elephant in the room - as the Brontosaurus in the bathtub.

I'd enjoy seeing a 40 over game, where the bowlers can bowl 10 overs each, effectively allowing 4 bowlers to complete the overs.

i wuld rather have 50 overs played out over 2 innings, than it being reduced to a 40 over batsmen only brawl.
