  • Non-opener opening penalty

Does anyone have any details on how severe a penalty is applied if you open with non-openers? When I've had to do it because of injuries, my stand-ins rarely make it past 25. In my current game, though, the AI at Wellington managed to make it out of contract negotiations at the end of season two with no openers whatsoever in their squad - but their regular opening pair are averaging around 49 each in first-class games so far (we're about two-thirds of the way through the season), which isn't too shoddy.

Spoke to Chris on this, odd that they didn't sign any openers, I've assigned to Chris and he's going to take a look.

Openers have the ability to negate some of the new ball advantage for bowlers. If a player is good enough and manages to see off the new ball then they can still do well opening even if not a specialist.

Personally when I'm playing, I'd still happily open with a very good middle order players. For example, if I've got someone averaging 45 in FC but is a middle order, and an opener who is only mid 30s, I'd be inclined to go with the middle order batsman.

But of course that also depends on who you've got to come in and how good they are, if you have better middle order options in reserve, you may think of not having a specialist opener, or even, training a middle order in to an opener.
    Not forgetting form as well!

Thanks, that's interesting food for thought. I can't remember whether there were just very few openers available to be snapped up in the first place (the NZ pool is quite small overall, of course) or whether they were just being ignored for some reason.
