In Test/First Class matches: Bowl with 3-4 aggression bars, unless the opposition are under pressure or the conditions heavily favour the bowling side. Don't bowl on leg stump, either bowl at middle or off. Pitch the ball up when it's swinging and you can vary your length once the ball starts getting older. It can be worth switching over/around the wicket if the batsman is settled to try and remove them. Spinners will generally begin to take wickets on a turning pitch once the ball is around 15-20 overs old.
In One Day matches: During the powerplay, bowl on 2-3 aggression bars unless the batsman has started well, then bowl on 1-2 bars. After the powerplay and during the middle overs, you can lower the aggression further and vary where the ball is being bowled, again preferably avoiding the leg stump unless setting a batsman up, which will require custom field settings. At the death, try and pitch the ball up but might be worth varying lengths, playing ball by ball can help with this.
In t20 matches: Generally in t20s, you want to have as defensive a field as possible, varying your lines and lengths. The ball by ball is useful in t20 as it becomes easier to vary and not let the batsmen settle. Change your bowlers every over during the powerplay and try to have 6 bowlers so if one is having a bad day then you have backup - even if they only bowl one over it is still important (batting all-rounders are good for this). Take the time to customise your fields based on the batsman's strengths and where most of their runs have been scored.

    Hope this helps you.

Thanks. I stopped playing for a while because of frustrating bull sh@t in bowling. Gonna go back to the game using your tips.

Very important to use your own fields I've found, I will also play ball-by-ball in important situations, a tip from here that helped me get success in the short formats.

In FC/Test I attack heavily, starting at 5 bars with the new ball, if I've got a big lead I maintain that. I pretty much ignore the whole England selector mentality of picking a bowler because they're economical too...all about wickets.

I find that you need to look at the opposition batsman's details to get them out. If it says they're strong off side and prefer back foot then bowl leg side and full. If it says they're a spin specialist then bowl pace. You just click in their name on the scorecard and look at the personal section for this info. Obviously pitch conditions might not match up and it's not an exact science but it's that kind of detail digging that's gets you wickets. In limited overs obviously try and get well in excess of a run a ball with the bat if batting first.

Oh and of course pick in form players.

I always seem to struggle bowling teams out in the 2nd innings, I regularly bowl teams out in the 1st innings for less than 200 and then post a decent score, but on wearing and uneven pitches on the 4th day my bowlers really struggle and the opposition makes 300+, does anyone here change their bowling strategy for the 2nd innings?

I'll go aggressively at the batsmen if I have the lead, try and create a bit of pressure. Works even better if it's cloudy, where I can use my seamers to effect. I don't like having the spinner bowl too aggressively though, given they have a tendency to be punished for runs.

Cheers Dave, I think that's where I've been going wrong, not staying aggressive enough in the 2nd innings, as soon as a Batsman gets settled and started whacking me around I drop to 3 bars as I do in the 1st innings, I will stay aggressive for longer when I have a big lead.

It might sound obvious, but avoid picking bowlers in poor form unless they are super stars. They are absolutely useless.

I start at 5, go down to 3 if the batsmen get settled, if they really get in then I'll go down to 1 (this switch can be very effective). I usually bowl the first few overs after a session on 5 even if they have a lot of runs whilst they get settled again before slipping back down. Don't just leave bowlers on getting smacked around, switch it up and don't be afraid to give none bowlers an over or two as some of them have a habit of picking up the odd wicket.

In one day games, I bowl at 1 or 0 nearly all the way through. I rarely conceed more than 270 doing this and around 150 in T20's, both of which should be very gettable with a reasonable and perhaps more importantly deep batting lineup
