Players retiring too early

Apologies if this has been raised already, but playing as NZ just had my main opening bowler retire at age 26 which is a bit frustrating. Is it just completely random when a player retires? I have had this happen with another one of my bowlers who was aged 31 at the time a few seasons back too.

Having played a bunch I can only say i've encountered it once when my captain randomly retired at age 30. Pretty annoying as he was obviously an integral part of my team but whatever.
