  • Spinners

    Hello all,

I was just wondering how people get the most out of their spinners? I've found that with my seamers I can get wickets bowling a full length aiming for outside off so long as I monitor their progress carefully, and take them off when they're going astray. With spinners I find that doing the same thing isn't as fruitful; equally if I get them to target the stumps they inevitably get creamed through the legside more. I'm playing with Lancashire, which means that I don't have amazing spinners per se, but they're OK. I find that they are surprisingly ineffective even on turning wickets, although they take a few wickets from time to time.

    Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!

I completely agree that it seems hard to get wickets with spinners in this game. I do find that legspinners are more likely to strike though, and tend to carry a legspinner in the longer format and use him in short bursts to try to take wickets. I think the batsman's preference has a big part to play too (a spin specialist seems very hard to remove with a spinner). As for where I bowl - good length, outside offstump to anything but a brand new batsman.

I have a left arm spinner who's pretty deadly. I vary my approach, coming over the wicket to right handers and around to lefties. I generally bowl a middle line on a good length 80% of the time in tests and usually outside off in ODI's, reverting to a full or middle line if i'm trying to take wickets.

Spinners are very important as i struggle to bowl sides out with pace bowlers. Nowadays i go for 2 opening pace bowlers, 2 spinners, and 1 pace bowling all rounder as my bowling attack for tests.

I think the default fielding settings for the spinners is a bit out of wack but with customised fields i have managed to have a bit of luck with the spinners.

That's a good point beedub. Could you describe the fields you use?

The default setting on three bars middle stump is what I will generally use if a batsmen is already set or a new batsmen is a spin specialist.

With the that field I will move the silly mid off across into mid wicket and push your mid on and mid off back to the edge of the ring

Set your pitch to spinners wicket. Only if you have decent spinners. With left arm spinners i bowl full and over wicket to a new batter. Off spinners ive had no luck with at all. And leggies go for too many

In my 1st season as somerset leach and van der merwe(both left armers) took loads of wickets. Leach can win games on his own(like in real life take note england selectors! However he becomes hugely inconsistant after 1st year but excellent in 50 overs

Ravi Chandran Ashwin is the leading wicket taker in my side... However my other spinners Jadeja n mishra have to struggle 8 out of 10 times to get impressive figures.
