Pakistan – 3rd ODI
We make one change to the last XI, as Jonny Bairstow comes in for James Taylor. The bowling unit remains unchanged though, as Woakes misses out.
Pakistan bat first for the 3rd game in a row after winning the toss.
For the first time this series, we looked toothless with the ball. We let Alam and Younus run amok, before some very good late hitting saw 93 scored in the last 10 overs. Broad was the pick of our bowling attack, but he was the only one to really look threatening.

We lost wickets regularly, and never really looked in with a shout. Wright and Morgan both hit half centuries, whilst there was 35 scored by Willey late on. Azam got on top of us early though, and Bairstow in particular struggled against him. We move onto the next game knowing that we can still win the series.

Pakistan – 4th ODI
Root drops out of the team this time, as we experiment with the order. Stokes goes up to 3, whilst Woakes comes back in to strengthen our bowling.
We win the toss this time and bat.
Apart from Bairstow and Patel, it was a dismal showing. An early capitulation was followed by players getting bogged down, or throwing their wickets away. Bairstow and Patel made it respectable with some quick runs, but we were well under par.

Pakistan started quickly, and never looked back. We didn’t help ourselves though, with poor bowling, and repeatedly dropping Younus. He eventually made 80 as Pakistan eased home, and levelled the series.

Pakistan – 5th ODI
No changes as we go into the decider at Rawalpindi. We also get a stroke of luck as we win the toss, so we’ll be batting.
You wouldn’t have thought Hales was out of form from the way he started, as we powered to 70-0 from the opening 10. Hales was the first wicket to fall for 61, but we already had 124 on the board, and we were in a good position.
Stokes didn’t hang around long, going for 10, but Bairstow continued his good performances with a high quality 71. Alongside centurion Wright, who got 103, we pushed on past 200, and when we reached the 40 over mark, we were set for a big total.
The bowlers did strike back, but we added another 63 in the last 10 to get us past the 300, and record the biggest total of the series so far.

Pakistan didn’t settle, and the woeful run out of Alam typified that point. Steve Finn got the key wicket of Khan moments later, and Willey came on to remove Sohail.
Shehzad and Akmal tried to stage a fightback, but Willey uprooted Akmal’s leg stump to almost end the game as a contest. Then came the Ben Stokes show. He bowled 3 overs, finishing the game with a hattrick, as he took 5-15, his best ODI figures. There was also a wicket for Luke Wright as well, fooling Hafeez with a slower delivery. We take the series 3-2, but we should really have finished the series as a contest after game 3.

Interestingly, my screens for the T20 series have gone AWOL. The results will still be up though, but it'll just be the scorecards. Normal service resumed for my trip to SAfrica.

Tour of South Africa
With the tour of South Africa, we are expecting seaming pitches. As such, Steven Finn returns to the test squad, to give us the extra fast bowler. Moeen Ali comes in mainly as a spinner, but his batting would allow for us to play an extra seamer.
Meanwhile, Gary Ballance returns to the touring squad. He’s had a good county season, so it was almost inevitable he would return.

South Africa – 1st Test Match
With a seaming pitch prepared as expected, we go into the test with a four man seam attack. Wood, Finn, Anderson and Broad all play, with Stokes and Ali in reserve for bowling. Bell keeps hold of the no.3 spot, so Ballance will have to wait for his test return.
We lose the toss, so we will be bowling.
The match in general was a shambles. We just didn’t bowl well enough. There were two major partnerships in the first innings, as Van Zyl and Elgar, then Piedt and Steyn, got on top of us. We bowled inconsistent lines, and our main bowlers were carted for runs. There were pleasing signs for Moeen, but there was little turn until late in the innings.
That we avoided the follow on was a testament to a counter attacking Stokes century. Apart from his 108 from 120, we got very little out of our order. There was a late counter from Wood and Anderson, but we finished way behind.
Having reduced SAfrica to 34-3, we had a small chance. That was immediately snuffed out by de Kock’s 134 from 159. Amla’s 88, and du Plessis’ run a ball 60 also took the game away from us, and they let us have the new ball for three deliveries before calling us in, and expecting us to defend for 4 and a half sessions.
Again, we only got a semi decent score on the board thanks to one big innings. This time it was Ian Bell, who’s 162 was magnificent to watch. Moeen provided a little partnership, but the rest collapsed like an Aussie batting line up. Not a great start to our tour.
One thing to note was the high amount of left handers deployed by SAfrica. We’ve used Willey in the past to try and counteract this, so that is likely to be worked again.

South Africa – 2nd Test Match
As suggested, David Willey comes into the side, to give us another option against the left handers that caused us so many problems in the last match. Luis Reece gives way, so Moeen will open the batting for the upcoming test. The risk is that we do have a very long tail for this match, but an average of 44 suggests Willey is capable enough with the bat when needed.
We lose the toss again, and bat first under cloudy skies.
A slow start for England saw us deal with most of the cloud with ease, but it was the beginning of day 2 that really caused us problems. Moeen and Cook started off well, both getting half centuries. Root also got runs, but the rest of the order was a little disappointing, and we were probably under par.
Broad got us a good start, removing van Zyl. Elgar, ABDV and Amla all fell quickly, and de Kock retired hurt. Du Plessis and Roussow provided some small resistance, but the tail collapsed quickly, and we retained a lead going into the second innings.
Cook provided the stable platform for the second innings, as he hit a magnificent 169 to give us a 500 run lead. Root and Bell hit 100 between them, whilst there were quick contributions from Buttler, Willey and Broad late on. We declared as soon as Cook departed midway through session 2 on day 4, and set ourselves up to skittle the South Africans to level the series.
What we didn’t see coming though was the vigil that ABDV and van Zyl put on. There was 251 on the board by the time we got ABDV, then we removed Amla next ball. With no de Kock, we looked better off, but du Plessis and and van Zyl put on another century stand. Broad bowled van Zyl, and we finally looked good to win. Ali picked up a couple of wickets in the tail again, and Anderson picked up a wicket, as we closed the win out by 80 runs. The series is levelled, and with 2 tests left, this series promises to be very competitive.
