I've always wondered this. I remember ages ago someone had a theory that the captaincy does tend to improve the performance of a batter, but had no impact on bowling.
I have no idea if this was proven correct or not, but I always give captaincy to my best batsman just in case.

When selecting a playing 11, does the Captain option actually make much of a difference? Or is it completely pointless?
