    Sussex vs Nottinghamshire

    Squad News:

Sayers is injured for 3 weeks, so Patel returns to the squad.

    Toss:
Sussex win the toss and elect to bat first.

    Day 1:
382-9 was the total Sussex reached on day 1, after some sloppy bowling. We improved towards the end of the day, but Sussex have the advantage at this stage.

    Day 2:
We got to 372-9 having removed Panesar with the first ball of the day. Strong innings from Taylor and Porterfield saw the game pretty much level at the halfway stage.

    Day 3:
After being all out in the opening over, we caused a Sussex collapse. Having been 49-4, they did recover to 206 all out, leaving us 217 to win in a day and half a session, so it should be doable.
We batted poorly and left ourselves in a poor position at 84-5. With 133 still to get, we need to get our heads down and bat through the day.

    Day 4:
We just about made it, but Broad wasn’t much use. Instead, a second century for Taylor, and a great innings for Fletcher saw us reach the target with a session to spare. Another win under the belt, and we look like a good unit this season.

    Batting Award:
James Taylor – Two match winning centuries

    Bowling Award:
Stuart Broad – Highest wicket taker in both innings

    Points:
    Notts 23, Sussex 7

    Nottinghamshire vs Yorkshire

    Squad News:

Swann is out for 4 weeks, so we bring Luke Fletcher in on a seaming pitch.

    Toss:
Yorkshire win the toss and bat first.

    Day 1:
Another good day for Notts, as we skittled Yorkshire for 226. Coles and Fletcher both got 3 each, and our bowling unit looks to be a lot better this season.
We reached 88-2 before the close, losing Hales and Taylor, but Guptill continues his good form and is 55* at the close.

    Day 2:
We finished on 358, but it could have been more had we not lost Sayers to injury. Guptill got a century though, and Porterfield provided some good runs, as we have another good lead. A couple of quick wickets tonight would be good.
Yorks finished on 58-0 as we couldn’t make a breakthrough.

    Day 3:
We struggled with the ball as Yorks got to 386-8. We need a couple of quick wickets on day 4, and then we could still win this.

    Day 4:
Having finally taken the last two wickets, we were left chasing a sizeable total. We pushed our luck a bit but we did get to the total eventually. We have a lot to thank Broad and Taylor for, as they both got quick half centuries.

    Batting Award:
Martin Guptill – Another classy century

    Bowling Award:
Fletcher – another great performance from the local lad.

    Points:
    Yorks 3, Notts 23

    Nottinghamshire vs Essex

    Squad News:

We start our season against the winners of Division 2. Follett, Patel and the injured Bates all miss out, so Swann, Porterfield and Sayers all come in.

    Toss:
Essex win the toss and choose to bat

    Day 1:
A good start to our campaign as we bowl Essex out for 252. All the bowlers contributed, with Coles and Payne getting 3 each. I have the luxury of a great bowling unit this season, and can rotate freely, so the likes of Fletcher and Shahzad will also get some games. I do lack a good 2nd spinner though, so I will be creating seaming pitches for most matches I feel.
Notts managed to reach 83-0 at the close, Guptill one short of his half century.

    Day 2:
We finished on 348, as Guptill fell just short of the century. We looked set for a bigger total, but Swann (44) had to leave the field with injury, which was a massive blow. Still, we have a decent lead, and in poor weather conditions, we need to capitalise.
Coles and Broad put Essex to the sword before the close, leaving them on 49-3, still 47 behind. At this point, we are in the driving seat.

    Day 3:
We bowled well at the start, as Essex were all out for 207, leaving us 112 to win. The bowlers stepped up without Swann, as Coles got 4 wickets, although his economy rate will need a bit of work. Very pleasing from the new arrivals so far.
A comfortable win. We lost Guptill for 47, but otherwise, no problems.

    Batting Award:
Martin Guptill – Two good performances for the Kiwi.

    Bowling Award:
Matt Coles – 7 in the match, showing signs of his talent

    Points:
    Essex 4, Notts 22

I got lucky, no WIndies touring this year!

Lots of ins and outs for Nottinghamshire, but I am very happy with the new arrivals. Very impressed with my new bowlers. Coles, Fuller and Payne all had very good seasons last year, and I’m hopeful that they can continue that. Hussey was a target but will be playing for Leics next year in the T20. Ball and Gurney didn’t really make enough progress for my liking either, so they left. Sayers and Porterfield will help contribute to the batting line up as well. Some good overseas players as well, 2 WIndians, and 2 Kiwis. All are very capable and I look set for next season.
