Essex won the toss and elected to bat.

    DAY 1

A steady start by Essex, Alastair Cook was the only wicket to fall before lunch. Cook only managed 19 runs, but that brought Varun Copra to the crease. Between them Chopra and Browne kept the ship steady, both scoring well without going on to make a big innings. Browne went first, for 61. Essex approached tea with just the two wickets gone, and in a position to kick on in the last session of the day. Disaster struck in the final few overs of the session, Chopra was trapped leg before for 66. The very next over England paceman James Anderson bagged two wickets, first Dan Lawrence for one run, then Ravi Bopara for a duck. From looking in a decent position before tea, the top order had been ripped apart by the close tea.

No more wickets fell after tea. Both Westley and Foster managed to see out the session just short of a half century each. Essex were 248-5 at the close.

    DAY 2

James Anderson stated the day claiming his fourth wicket, catching James Foster off his own bowling within the first half hour. Essex will be disappointed with the collapse of their tail, particularly Tom Westley, who was batting well and just needed a partner to assist him. The last three wickets fell in the space of four balls for Essex to have their innings closed on 313 all out.

The Lancashire innings started well, openers Jennings and Hameed put on a partnership of 103. Ravi Bopara came on to bowl in the afternoon session, and claimed the first wicket. Essex continued to toil before and after tea, until Bopara returned for an excellent three wicket spell. The second wicket partnership of Jennings and Davies had scored 71 runs until Bopara caught and bowled Davies. Next over Jennings fell, followed two overs later by Livingstone. Charmer came on to bowl his off spin, claiming the wicket of Chanderpaul. Steamer Jamie Porter was also getting in on the act trapping Croft lbw. Harmer took his second wicket by having Vilas caught by Tom Westley. What looked like being a tough day for Essex was turned around in the third session to leave the visitors edging ahead.

    DAY 3

With the morning weather overcast and cloudy, Essex looked to finish off the Lancashire innings early, and prevent any defiant wag from the tail. Medium packers Aaron Beard and Ravi Bopara aimed to take advantage of the weather before the new ball in ten overs. Bopara made the early breakthrough, taking the wicket of Joe Mennie. No more wickets fell before the arrival of attack bowlers Porter and Wagner, however the last two Lancashire wickets of Parry and Anderson fell in Porter's second over, both courtesy of flying catches at fourth slip by Dan Lawrence. With a 67 run lead openers Cook and Browne aim was to steadily add runs to the advantage, but ensure their wickets remained intact before lunch.

After the break Browne fell to Parkinson for 34 runs, and Chopra wasn't long in following him back to the pavilion as Anderson claimed his fifth wicket of the match. Cook continued to bat steadily, and along with Westley the pair steered Essex towards the tea break. The pair remained in place at the close of play, Essex have a 265 run lead, with Cook 86 not out, and Westley 63 not out.

    DAY 4

Cook and Westley added another 51 runs at the start of day four. Cook had hit 112, Westley 86 and a partnership of 164 runs were amased before the declaration came forty minutes before lunch. Lancashire were set 316 runs for victory, but the Essex bowlers would be straight on the attack with half hour to play before lunch. Porter and Wagner were to absolutely terrorise the Lancashire openers, with both Jennings and Hameed falling before the break. Hameed would go first lbw to Porter for a duck, with Jennings quickly following bowled by Wagner for 7. With the pitch uneven Porter and Wagner would continue to bowl short pitched deliveries, Porter claiming another two wickets in his spell. Off spinner Harmer came on to continue the sustained attack. Four more wickets were to fall before tea, Harmer claiming all four.

Lancashire were truely up against it to maintain there last two wickets, with only the tail to come. It didn't take long for Porter and Wagner to remove the last two Lancashire batsmen. The innings ended 87 all out, with Essex winning by 219 runs. The win sends the reigning champions top of the table.

Essex won the toss and elected to bat.

      ESSEX INNINGS

Essex got off to a steady start, but with only 23 runs on the board Nick Browne was out lbw for 13 off the bowling of Stuart Broad. Broad was also to take the next wicket of Varun Chopra, clean bowling the opener for 24 runs. Essex started to accelerate the run rate, Tom Westley hit 53 runs, Dan Lawrence a very good 89 0ff 95 balls, and a superb 93 off 63 balls by Ravi Bopara. Debutant Khushi showed brief support to Bopara and Adam Wheater, but only managed 8 runs before being caught behind by de Kock off the bowling of Luke Wood. Essex hit a big 321 for 6 off of their 50 overs.

      NOTTINGHAMSHIRE INNINGS

Notts would have to score quickly without losing too many wickets to be in with a shout of being close to the Essex total in the final overs of this game. Quinton de Kock and Riki Wessels got Notts off to a flyer, they posted 127 for the first wicket. That was until de Kock was out for 63, caught by Harmer off the slow left arm of Zaidi. Jamie Porter returned for his second spell, he removed other opener Wessels for 75, caught behind by Wheater. Another two wickets fell in Porter's spell of bowling, but Notts were still scoring freely. The problem for Notts was that, not just runs were flowing, but the wickets were also falling at regular intervals. Eventually the wickets ran out and Notts were 290 all out, allowing Essex to win by 31 runs.

Man of the match was Ravi Bopara for his 93 off 63 balls.

Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to field.

        DAY ONE

Today's overcast and cloudy conditions will heavily favour the bowling side, and it didn't take Notts long to make the breakthrough. Ex-England captain Alastair Cook was caught for two runs by Nash off the bowling of Cook's international teammate Stuart Broad. Essex didn't lose anymore wickets before lunch, but the scoring rate was slow, due to be cautious of the very cloudy conditions. Browne was out not long after lunch for 38, bowled by Footitt. Chopra was then caught by de Kock, off the bowling of Fletcher, for 21. Notts continued to take advantage of the conditions as another two Essex wickets fell in the half hour before tea. Dan Lawrence was bowled by Steven Mullaney for 6, and Bopara was out lbw to Footitt for 12.

Tom Westley was out lbw to Broad the first over after tea, but the rain that had threatened all day came to Essex's rescue, and no more play was available. Essex finished the day on 133 for 6.

        DAY TWO

The weather was better for the start of day two, but unfortunately for Essex their batting wasn't. The last four wickets fell for 21 runs with still half hour to play before lunch. Broad claimed his third wicket, bowling Harmer for 2. Not to be out done Luke Fletcher took another two wickets to match Broad, firstly Wheater for 21, and then Porter for a duck. The final wicket was claimed by Jake Ball, trapping Matt Coles lbw for 12. It's now down to the Essex bowlers to bring their side back into the game on the uneven pitch.

Bowling his first over of the championship season Matt Coles pitched a ball in on a short length that caught Chris Nash off guard, the ball flew to Bopara who took the catch, Essex had made the break through before lunch. After the early hiccup, Mullaney and Libby had steadied the ship for Notts, but the skies were getting darker and rain eventually fell, delaying play for forty five minutes. Off spinner Harmer and medium pacer Bopara were the bowlers before the interuption, and continued when play resumed, the use of Bopara being paricularly incisive. The medium pacer took three wickets between the resumption from rain, and break for tea. First to go was Jake Libby trapped lbw for 28. Next was opener Mullaney, who was starting to look dangerous, like Libby a full length ball trapped the batsman three runs short of a half century. The very next ball William Root, brother of England captain Joe, was caught at slip by Simon Harmer. The break arrival was welcomed by Notts, but Essex had used the conditions to good effect.

The third over after tea Porter claimed the fifth Notts wicket, his first of the game, Samit Patel lbw for 25. Matt Coles came on to replace Porter, and de Kock was soon taking a walk, another lbw victim. Throughout the evening session Simon Harmer had bowled well, taking three wickets, Riki Wessels for 39, Stuart Broad for 5, and Jake Ball for 16. At the close of play the final wicket pair of Fletcher and Footitt remained , with Notts 210 for 9, 56 runs ahead.

        DAY THREE

With the fifteenth ball of the morning the Notts innings was brought to a close, Fletcher another victim for Harmer. Only another 5 runs were added to the overnight total, but Essex would have to bat a lot better than the first innings to create a winning position. Openers Cook and Browne got the Essex 2nd innings off to a good start, putting on a partnership of 149 for the first wicket, Browne the batsman out for 66 runs. Another good partnership was formed between Cook and Chopra, this time 80 runs before Cook went for 109. A mix up between Chopra and Westley see Westley run out for a duck. Dan Lawrence arrived at the crease, but didn't last long as he was caught by de Kock, off the bowling of Stuart Broad for 7. Bopara arrived to partner Chopra and see out the rest of play unscathed. Essex finished 256 for 4, 195 runs ahead.

        DAY FOUR

The now erratic pitch claimed three Essex wickets before lunch. Varun Chopra was bowled by Footitt for 42, Bopara was next bowled by Jake Ball for 18, quickly followed by Harmer, caught de Kock, bowled by Ball for 1. After the lunch interval it would be a case of what would happen first in Essex's second innings, the loss of all remaing wickets or the declaration. Adam Wheater and Matt Coles amased a decent partnership of 40 runs, before Wheater was out lbw to Footitt for 37. Porter lasted twelve balls before Broad upended his off stump for 2 runs. Coles and Sam Cook added another 15 runs before the innings was declared with Essex 280 runs ahead. The Essex second innings total, 341 for 9 declared.

Jamie Porter opened the bowling for Essex, but it was his fellow opener Matt Coles who landed the first Notts wicket, Chris Nash was caught at second slip by Varun Chopra for zero, and only two runs on the board. The same combination was to remove Nash's opening partner, Notts captain Steven Mullaney. Essex all rounder Ravi Bopara came on to bowl before tea. His efforts see Samit Patel caught at slip by Alastair Cook for 20 runs. A good effort by the Essex bowlers to take three wickets for 60 runs before tea, but a huge effort would be required to remove another seven.

Upon the resumption Essex turned to main wicket takers Porter and Harmer. The combination would make an immediate effect, Harmer would take the wicket of Root, caught by Lawrence. Next Porter would trap Libby leg before. With five wickets down any chances of a Notts win were pretty much gone, but could Essex keep on taking wickets. Wessels and de Kock tried to stop the Notts rot with a partnership of 33, but de Kock became another lbw victim, Coles the bowler. Notts had now lost their sixth wicket, two runs shy of a hundred. Another glimmer of hope came in the partnership of Wessels and Broad. 21 runs were added until Broad succumbed to Sam Cook for 6. There was now no concern over the Notts run score as only three more wickets were needed, but would there be enough time for Essex to take them? Porter returned for a two over spell, and sent Luke Fletcher back to the pavillion for two runs. Sam Cook supported with his second wicket, that of Jake Ball. Thirty minutes of play remained, could Riki Wessels keep enough of the strike from last man, Mark Footitt, to see Notts earn a draw. Essex had again turned to Porter and Harmer to claim the match winning scalp. Wessels and Footit were battling away when the match entered the penultimate over, but a last effort of pace by Porter skittled Footitt's stumps, and earned Essex a 135 run victory that didn't seem likely after the first day.

Man of the Match - Alastair Cook.

          Sam Cook Paul van Meekeren

Essex won the toss and elected to bat.

          DAY ONE

After winning the toss in this day/night championship game Essex were looking at getting off to a flying start. However, the pre match weather forecast didn't work out entirely accurate, and very overcast conditions prevaled throughout the day. The countries leading run scorer Alastair Cook struggled, and was caught at slip by Matt Renshaw, the bowler Dom Bess. Varun Copra came in to bat, and like Cook, strugglled to get going. Bowler Bess was taking advantage of the conditions, and Chopra became his second victim, caught by keeper Trenouth for 12. Opener Browne would now need to anchor the innings, being joined by the capable Tom Westley. The pair batted through the rest of the day, but were tied down by a combination of dark conditions, change of day to night, an uneven pitch, and good bowling. At the close Essex had only 183 runs on the board.

          DAY TWO

Better condition for batting, but Somerset will be the happier team after a good morning session by their bowlers. By lunch five Essex wickets tumbled for the addition of 71 runs. Westley was bowled by Somerset captain Lewis Gregory for 72, the out of form Dan Lawrence was dismissed in the same fashion for 10. Despite the pitch favouring the seamers, it would be the spinners who would take charge, ten Doeschate would be next out, lbw to Bess for 2. Wheater and Harmer wouldn't last long both falling to Jack Leach, Wheater caught and bowled for 4, Harmer misreading the spin and bowled for 1. The only ray of light for Essex being Nick Browne who remained 124 not out. Aussie Peter Siddle was next to depart, caught behind off the bowling of Gregory for 7. A mini revival came courtesy of 51 run partnership between Browne and Porter, during which Browne passed 150 runs. Browne was next batsman out though, becoming Gregory's fourth victim for a innings saving 160 runs. Only one more run had been added to the total, before last man Sam Cook was bowled by van Meekeren for 1. The Essex innings closed on 317 all out, a better total than what it looked like it would be at one stage, but the Essex bowlers would again have to perform to stay in the game.

The Essex bowlers wouldn't disappoint, especially Jamie Porter. Despie the pending heroics of Porter, it was Aussie Peter Siddle who struck the first blow, Trescothick caught at first slip by Harmer for 11. Simon Harmer would be the next bowler to put Somerset under pressure, Renshaw lbw for 15. Then Porter arrived back on the scene, first scalp Tim Rouse lbw for 13, the van der Merwe bowled for 10. Siddle returned to bowl Hildreth for 18, then Porter again trapping Gregory lbw for 1.

The Somerset innings was in danger of total collapse, and posting a paltry total, but Peter Trego and Dom Bess would do their best to hold out.

          DAY THREE

A fine partnership of 80 between Trego and Bess propelled Somerset from 76-6, to 156-7, Bess to batsman out for 33, caught at slip by Harmer off the deadly Porter. The Essex paceman would strike again to remove Trenouth, lbw for 3. Somerset were 166-8, that would soon be 166-9 as Trego would be caught by Westley off Harmer for 52. Porter would bring the innings to an end with his sixth wicket, bowling van Meekeren for 4. Somerset finished their first innings 171 all out.

Cook and Browne opened the innings for Essex, and did the job that was required from them. A partnership of 102 for the first wicket put Essex well in command of the game, Cook the batsman out bowled by Bess for 60. A second wicket would fall, Bess again the bowler, Chopra caught by Renshaw for 11. At the close of play Essex were 143-2, 289 runs ahead.

          DAY FOUR

Tom Westley would be the only Essex wicket to fall, after an hours play the innings was declared on 190-3, Browne not far short of his second century of the match on 86 not out. Somerset have the task of scoring 337 runs to win, or save ten wickets to avoid defeat.

Essex set up their field placements to attack, knowing that Somerset would have to take their chances if they attempted to win the game. Unfortunately for the visitors, paceman Jamie Porter was showing the form deserving of an England call up. Porter struck in the first over dismissing Renshaw for 2, Trescothick didn't last much longer as the paceman bowled him for 8. Somerset went in at lunch with two wickets already gone. Siddle struck to dismiss Rous, before taking his second wicket to dismiss van der Merwe. Hildreth scored a good 85, but, Porter again was the assasin. Trego became Porter's tenth wicket of the match for 10 runs.

Somerset were now staring down the barrel. Bess was next out to guess who?, yes, Porter. Sam Cook took his first wicket of the innings, trapping Trenouth lbw. Smelling blood, Essex went for the kill, Siddle devoured Leach, while the main assasin, Porter, wrapped up an Essex victory bowling van Meekeren for the last wicket, his twelth of the match.

Essex won the match by 135 runs to stay top of the County Championship.

Despite match figures of 87-12, Jamie Porter was overlooked for the man of the match award. That went to teammate Nick Browne for his 160 and 86 not out.

            Karl Carver Simon Harmer
            Jack Brooks Peter Siddle
            Ben Coad Jamie Porter

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bowl.

            ESSEX INNINGS

Essex posted a huge score in their innings against Yorkshire. Essex got off to a fairly standard start posting 40 runs off the first ten overs. Varun Chopra was out caught by Carver, off the bowling of Ben Coad for 20 runs. Tom Westley only lasted five ball before being caught and bowled for a duck by Coad. Even after 20 overs the score was nothing spectacular, but then the acceleration started. In form batsman Nick Browne shared a 57 partnership with Dan Lawrence, until the latter sucumbed to Bresnan, with Tattersall taking the catch behind the stumps. Browne and new partner Bopara then scored the main partnership of the innings, their partnership of 142 accelerated the Essex score to 269 runs, Bopara eventually run out for 77. Browne was to continue for the time being, until being bowled by Tim Bresnan. A fantastic innings had come to an end with Browne hitting 134 runs off 138 balls, that incuded 19 fours and 3 sixes. Wicket keeper Adam Wheater came to the crease to join Ryan ten Doeschate. A useful partnership of 30 pushed Essex over the 300 run mark. ten Doeschate became the second caught and bowled of the innings for 30 runs, Bresnan the benefactor. Only one more wicket fell, Wheater bowled Rafiq for 14 on the final ball of the 50 overs.

Essex will be delighted with the 333 for 7 score.

            YORKSHIRE INNINGS

For Yorkshire to win this match was always going to be a monumental task, having to score at over six runs an over, while preserving wickets. They started scoring well, but the problem was wickets were falling early. Yorkshire lost their first three wickets for 53 runs. The first of those wickets was Adam Lyth, bowled Porter for 3 runs. Tattersall was on the same amount of runs when dismissed in the same style, by the same bowler. Two good partnerships then started to get Yorkshire back on track, Pujara starrring in both. He was first involved in a 99 run partnership with Kohler-Cadmore, until the latter was bowled by Harmer for 53. The next partnership was with Jack Leaning and posted 94 runs to the Yorkshire score. Leaning was out lbw to Porter for 35. Yorkshire still needed to score runs though, but the pressure got too much. Tim Bresnan went lbw to Siddle for 11, then next ball Rafiq was caught and bowled by the Aussie. One day specialist Ashar Zaidi took the wicket of Pujara. If we thought the innings of Browne was superb, the one by Pujara was majestic. Pujara hitting 156 off 107 balls. Siddle claimed his third wicket of the final, taking the scalp of Brooks for 9. Karver was the last man out bowled by Zaidi.

Yorkshire had battled well, but in the end fell 41 runs short of the Essex total.

                SUMMARY:
The Middlesex bowlers did a pretty reasonable job keeping Essex to moderate score, with Steven Finn and Jake Harris being particularly economical. Feroze Khushi again top scored for Essex, hitting 45 off 33 balls. Essex looked to be bowling well in the opening overs, but firstly Nick Gubbins, then man of the match Dwayne Bravo got on top of the run rate for Middlesex.
