  • THIRD TEST + SERIES REVIEW

All up we lost over eight hours to rain over the five days, so a result was impossible. Day Five was a complete write off with not a single delivery bowled. Mitchell Starc took 3-78 but I thought we bowled really, really poorly first up. With overcast skies for almost all of day one we just weren't consistent enough for my liking. I was hoping we could restrict them to something under 250 but I realised early that just wasn't going to happen. By the time we got to bat I was really dreading it. The cloud cover increased and we haven't exactly batted well in recent times. Out strides David Warner and he just makes a mockery of my worries with a brilliant 244. Michael Clarke joined him on the centurion list with 114* before calling for an aggressive declaration.

Our second innings with the ball started strongly, taking 3-19 early on. At that point I'd thought maybe a victory could be on the cards. Ross Taylor and Corey Anderson steadied well for the Kiwis to take them to the conclusion of day four, and that was the end of the Test match, unfortunately.

Overall it was a pretty disappointing series if I'm honest. We were insipid at the GABBA and from there just couldn't get back on top overall. The Adelaide Oval Test was a step in the right directed but the Perth weather was always going to make a series win difficult.

    • Next up we have another three Test series at home against the West Indies, and we're looking to dominate after a pretty poor run in recent times. We're starting off at the GABBA (should be Hobart - attn Chris, Sureshot etc) here again, so hopefully we can perform better than last time there. The 12 man squad has been named, here it is:

        • FIRST TEST REVIEW + SECOND TEST NEWS

Not much can be done about that. We were given a road that didn't deteriorate over the five days in blistering sun for most sessions. It was a different feel this year with the Boxing Day Test being scheduled for the GABBA, and it played much like a traditional MCG wicket should in the end. We bowled okay in the first innings. Our bowling group bowled really tight which was pleasing and it allowed us the build loads of pressure which lead to early wickets. I thought we'd probably post around 500 in our first innings, and had it not been for the brilliance of Mitchell Johnson (79) and Peter Nevill (75) we may not have made half of our target. In the end, we walked away with a very minimal lead.

With literally no deterioration to speak of, the runs continued to flow in the second innings. Mitchell Marsh bowled really well to get us going taking our only two wickets in two sessions worth of bowling, but in the end it was all to no avail. The West Indies declared with us needing 320 from two and a half sessions of cricket. I chose to attack from the get go, and thought a sneaky win might be on the cards at certain points throughout the innings. Ultimately we ran out of time, and head onto the MCG hoping there is something, anything in the wicket.

          • Still loving your work mate - most enjoyable thread on the forum for me

Am looking to pick a "proper" spinner as opposed to a bits and pieces one for the ODIs and T20s so have taken an interest in your posts.

Think I'm like you in that I just don't trust Maxwell to bowl the full compliment of overs so that means picking an additional spinner.

As I'd rather they can also offer something with the bat as well that really only leaves Agar & O'Keefe
            - Ahmed and Lyon are I think more suited to the 5 day game.
..... Any thoughts on who you'd prefer as I can see you have picked both for the squads at least?

I know Doherty used to get the nod for T20 games - is that still the case?

              Hi mate,

Appreciate the kind words, means a lot.

Cam Boyce had a great start to the T20's at the beginning of my save. In terms of that format he's going to play a lot for me, he's tailed off a bit in recent times but someone worth considering. Didn't have a great run with Adam Zampa in the ODI setup, he was really expensive and not at all lethal. Ended up taking a punt on James Muirhead in the ODI format and he worked quite well. He didn't have much form behind him so it was a hunch call that paid off, I actually picked him as a back-up and had to pick him because Zampa was just giving me nothing. Lyon is another one you could look at, he cut his teeth at One Day level for South Australia and his performance there led to a full-time domestic contract. I haven't used him personally, but he could be worth trying if nothing else is providing results. I hate Doherty and will never, ever use him in a Cricket Captain save.

In other news I do have a small dilemma. I booted the game up on the standard PC (have been playing on laptop due to bulging disc in my back) ran a few test saves and seem to be finding what I believe are more realistic results, for example the West Indies aren't making 400+ in the fourth innings to save the match on this one. In my first full played match, I bowled a side out for a sub-200 score, something I'd only achieved once in 13 Tests on the original save. Ideally I'd like to retire Michael Clarke after the Ashes too, so part of me wants to continue the new save. The other part of me knows most people probably won't care for the same 10 pages of results once more, so I'm not sure which way to go about it.

One thing I will say, the game is unbelievable when played with a proper PC. Props to Chris & Co. if you're reading these threads. Great work.

              • Hey Mate,

Try using Ashton Agar, i have just started and he is making runs and taking wickets in Tests, Also Berendorff is a gun in the shorter format.
Pete Handscomb and Marcus Stoinis are both very handy inclusions that I use.
