  • Coaching Effectiveness

    Hello,

First of all, really enjoying the new coaching options in this year's iteration of the game. Splitting agression and opening status between red and white ball is a significant step forward.

However I can't help but feel that almost all Technique and Specialism coaching takes far too long to take effect.

I don't necessarily mind it taking a season or two to take a player from defensive to average aggression wise, as after all if it was quick and easy then everyone would be striking at top end rates in all formats right?

However I do think that moving players between opening and middle order should be much more dynamic. After all in both red and white ball, especially the latter it's not unusual to see players moving between opening and middle order slots fairly often. For instance this season we've seen Glamorgan use Northeast as a T20 opener whereas he'd been used more often at around 4 by Hampshire. Similarly James Bracey has moved to open for Gloucestershire after previously batting a bit further down.

I feel as such that especially with limited overs opener/middle order timeframes these should be much quicker - couple months max. Therefore as a County I can for instance start the season and have a middle order player ready to open by the time the Blast starts.

Equally I think that currently it's far, far too hard to turn a part time batter or a bowler who can bat a bit into an all rounder. In fact with one exception I've never had it happen. Said exception was turning a bowler into an opening all rounder with opener training. I'm not actually sure whether it's Middle order training or batting technique to make a normal all rounder? Either way I feel it should be much more achievable to do this.

Lastly it still feels like general technique coaching doesn't do anything. I'd say this should be significantly more effective. Given the level of coaching and performance analysis players get these days I think it's realistic that a young player put on this training should make significant progress within half a season to a season with multiple "player has improved his..." messages.

If they don't select to make coaching quicker, we should get updates, now these updates could happen every week, a player need not make progress, but the updates will help and make the whole coaching feature more useful in general

My isues are with how little clarity is given over what the coaching actually achieves and how the system works.

The first could be explained quite easily and quickly.

The second is my bugbear. When a coaching improvement actually happens is completely and utterly random. I have tested it numerous times by waiting for the "Boris Johnson has improved his ability to tell the truth" message (or whatever I am trying to improve) then shutting the game down without saving it. In theory that message should come up again, if not at the exact same time then pretty soon after. In practice that message might not come up at all, even if you have half the season remaining.

Coaching improvements should be effective through a combination of time and performance, not the flip of a coin.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. Coaching feels completely random, and your testing shows that it clearly is. I actually like that it's dynamic in some ways (i.e. some players will develop quicker than others, and some simply won't develop at all) - that's exactly how it should be, but the fact that the same player, in the same circumstances over the same period of time will have differing results is not great.

As pointed out above, it'd be great to get some sort of notification about coaching progress. Players don't necessarily need to get better quicker in my books, but if you got a generic message every few weeks saying something like "John Smith's training is progressing better than expected", "John Smith's training is on track as per expectations" or "John Smith's training isn't progressing as well as we'd hoped" - you could make a strategic decision about whether to persist with that players development.

In each case I had finished a match, saved the game and moved on to the next when the message about the player's improvement popped up.

Now I could understand if performances effected the rate of training. If I had played a match where they took 5-30, the message came up, I restarted the game then played the match again but this time they took 1-25. I would expect that to alter when training took effect.

If a player improved in those five days between matches once they should improve in those five days every time

Up to 17 votes and now one in the middle box in favour of keeping it as it is so top 2 box score down to 88%.

Another question RE coaching; coaching batting specialism for eg. one day opener, results in a player moving to the middle order for OD but not for T20. This would mean it isn’t possible to move player batting preferences in T20?

Leave them on it, the changes happen one at a time in sequence.

There is a change in the next update related to this thread. When the next update is out (which will take a bit longer as we're having to sync release across all platforms due to a match engine change), we will reply properly to this thread.

Just curious if this eventuated, and if so, what was the update?

The update is out in the next couple of days (just waiting on Google, as we're having to sync all releases for this patch), it does contain a change to coaching effectiveness. Once the patch is out we'll have a proper reply in here.

I've been having some great success with coaching, more so than in other years, but it is still very patchy. Be interesting to see how the latest update changes that.

We've made some changes in the last patch to coaching, please let us know your feedback.

Effectiveness of training is significantly higher than it was in CC2021.

With regards to opener training being quicker, we don't agree with this, in First Class opening is difficult, there are various examples of players trying to open and struggling in the longer formats, like Jason Roy. Opener training should not be quick in the game. In the white ball formats, being an opener is less important in CC2022 than it was in CC2021 with our AI changes for this year
